The truth about ACCUTANE

The truth about Accutane and why it should have never been legal for women in the beginning. This is not to say it is evil, just a video highlighting the missing drug research on women for decades. It truly is a miracle drug, but at what cost? Accutane. Was never supposed to be legal. Give lesson. Got created. Because this drug wasn't created first for acne in the first place. In the 1960s, Hoffmann-La Roche synthesized Isotretinoin, the drug we now know as Accutane. It wasn't initially investigated like in cancer research. And in the 1970s, a dermatologist called Gary Park got investigating this drug for patients with severe cystic acne all over their back and face, not just pimples. So after the test was done, the results were incredible. By 1982, it was approved in the US for nodular acne treatment. The core problem on this entire thing is that the entire research was mostly done on men. In 1977, the FDA recommended excluding women who could become pregnant. That policy wasn't revoked until 1993. So for years, women were massively underrepresented in the earliest stages of drug research. Our hormones, our physiology, our drug metabolism is completely different. And Accutane is not a little skincare product. It's an oral retinoid that goes into your system and dramatically changes your sebum production. Your oil glands shrink, your sebum production drops dramatically. Exactly why it's approved. Simply works. So well. Before you take Accutane, I want you to listen to me because this is crucial. Accutane was a sports class and I wanted to run. My legs literally felt like jelly. My muscles just felt so weak. My joints felt weird. My lips were obviously dry. And by the way, here are all the side effects in one picture. Your dermatologist probably told you the biggest risk. Reproductive risk is pregnancy. Isotretinoin can cause severe birth defects. It's exactly why pregnancy prevention is taken extremely serious. My opinion. Not myself. Incredibly specifically for the first months. After six months, it came back and I had to pivot to natural remedies. But if you have painful hindering outside, Accutane can be an option. But if you have relatively manageable acne as a woman, I would absolutely not recommend taking it. You'd be way better off with topical retinol. So in the end, it will always be your choice.
