Most people don't realize what's about to hit thrift stores and estate sales, and it's not furniture Deloitte's Art and Finance Report estimates that $992 billion in art and collectibles will pass from baby boomers to their heirs over the next decade Economists call this the great wealth transfer But a huge chunk of it isn't cash, it's stuff Here's the problem for baby boomers: their kids often don't want their art So some of these collections are going to auction houses, but a lot of it is just getting donated, sold at estate sales, listed on Facebook marketplace, which means real valuable pieces end up getting priced just like junk What to look for at the thrift store: • artist signature and date • numbered edition (i.e. 10 out of 20) • gallery labels • quality frame If somebody paid a lot for a frame, they probably put that frame over something that's already valuable Often, the caliber of work that shows up at galleries shows up at estate sales and thrift stores too You just got to know to look for those little details Follow me I will keep flagging what's heading to the second-hand market and how you can find it
