My full-time job is as a psychotherapist. I’ve spent thousands of hours working with clients and years continuing my specialization as a trauma therapist. At the core of that work is a deep curiosity about people and the internal and external systems that shape us. Every day, I approach therapy through a holistic lens, particularly the Person-in-Environment theory. It’s a framework first introduced to me in grad school that views someone’s behavior, well-being, and challenges as deeply connected to the physical, social, cultural, and economic realities they exist within. It seems obvious, but fully acknowledging that we are not separate from our environment—we are constantly engaged with and shaped by it—changes the way you understand people and the decisions they make. And of course I think about clothes and style through that lens, too. Being a woman (especially right now, in a political and social culture so hostile toward non-dominant identities) shapes how we relate to our bodies, how we dress them, how much space we allow ourselves to occupy, and how we show up in the world. There’s a lot of unlearning to do. A lot of rewiring when it comes to our bodies, how we adorn them, and how freely we allow ourselves to be seen. But I promise that work is worth doing. And maybe it can start with your next outfit. #therapist #styling #itsthatdeep
