Have you seen this medication before? So this is what she goes through every night so she won't fall asleep at work while she's driving. Okay, let's see how that medication. Oh, today's drug of the day is gonna be Xywav, which is actually FDA approved to help with narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia. So Xywav is the brand name for calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium oxybates. When it comes to narcolepsy, you can use this as young as someone who is seven years old. And then for idiopathic hypersomnia, you can use this in adults. When it comes to adults for narcolepsy, the dosing is 4.5 grams per day. And usually you're going to split that up into two doses. It gets crazy. It is so important for pharmacists to know this to patients. The first dose you're actually going to administer at bedtime. The second dose is two and a half to four hours after that first dose. So like at nighttime. Why it's a actually have to dilute it with water about like a quarter of a cup. One thing you wanna recommend is to have the patient actually take the medication when they are in bed because they may like fall asleep pretty quickly. So I'm sure you're wondering, Ethan, how does this even work? It's believed to work pretty much what this medication is doing is through GABA-B signaling while you're sleeping. Thought to improve symptoms of narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia, including excessive daytime sleepiness and cataplexy. When it comes to common side effects, a lot of them are gonna be what we see in medications like nausea, headache, dizziness, but also things like anxiety, decreased appetite, sweating, vomiting. Also sleepwalking. Does have a boxed warning because it is a very powerful CNS depressant because it can possibly cause respiratory depression. So you have to be careful with things like alcohol, which is not recommended to be drinking while taking this.
