RUN CLUBS AREN'T WELCOME IN BLACK L.A

5K run planned for Leimert Park is facing backlash. Tonight over its wording. It's now being forced to relocate. Fox Eleven's Gina Silva live now in Leimert Park with what sparked the online threats and how organizers are now responding. Gina. That's right. You know, online this situation quickly spiraled out of control. But in person, when people talk it out, things look different. Attention South Central LA. We're throwing a 5K in Crenshaw. Yes, Crenshaw. So get your running shoes ready. So on Sunday, September 6th at 9 AM, we're meeting up at Leimert Park and taking over the street. Barrio Athletics is a Southern California run club that organizes 5K runs in different neighborhoods. This time they picked Leimert Park and the backlash was swift. We don't want you to come into Africa Town. Please make note of it. You got time still to relocate your your event. You will be met with resistance from the black community. The controversy went viral with some social media comments threatening to call ice if the runner showed up. The backlash forced Barrio Athletics to move from Leimert Park to Allensworth Park. At the Merritt Park Plaza, people have a lot to say about how this was handled. We do not support calling them ice on Latino. No. There's always been miscommunications and misunderstandings. We're meeting up at Leimert Park and taking over the street. So basically, what's going on is this is either a check-in, yo, you either got a check-in or it's gonna be pure discrimination. Now, to their credit, they're smart enough to say, we don't want any confrontation. So what we're going to do is completely move this whole event to somewhere else. What a lot within black culture is that you're actually continuing to discriminate against the very things that you advocate against. So you want inclusivity, you want people to support you, you want to move into whatever neighborhood you want to go into. But then it becomes like a gang, right? Because I've only heard of check-ins when it came to the hip hop community, came to people traveling for shows and they would say, hey, listen, if you're gonna come to this city, or if you're gonna do a tour here, then you're gonna have to check in in order for us to make sure you safe, right? Or in order for you to come into a park that I've never heard that in any other culture in any other community whatsoever. I've never heard of anybody saying and and recommending to check in to a public space, a public park that is maintained by all people's tax dollars and all of that that I've never heard of before in my entire life. And so what happened was you now seeing threats from social media from several different people, including the one person shown here. And the threats and they basically said, listen, if you pull up, then it's up. We're gonna do everything within our power. It's ironic because these are the same people and it's not everybody, but let's address the elephant in the room. Uh, this is from the same culture that they didn't rock with. That they wasn't necessarily rocking with Trump. But then when it's convenient for them when another group, the Latino community, then they say, well, wait a minute, we're gonna call ice on y'all. As though that means anything to somebody if a citizen in the US is gonna call ice on y'all. If y'all pull up to a run club. Now, remember, this is not them doing anything egregious.
