What is the difference between a temple and a shrine in Japan? ⛩️ SHRINE (神社) — Shinto • Usually has a torii gate at the entrance • Visitors often bow before entering • Purification at a water basin • Pray by bowing twice, clapping twice, then bowing once 🛕 TEMPLE (寺) — Buddhism • Often has a large gate at the entrance • May have Buddhist statues or a pagoda • Incense is commonly used for purification • You generally do not clap when praying Both are beautiful and culturally important!
