If I have exactly a 5-year timeline to buy a house, I would have four slices of pumpkin pie and six slices of key lime. Let me explain. Most people think of pie charts when they hear the word asset allocation, but I like to think of my two favourite pies. Pumpkin pie is like fixed income because it's fairly predictable, but it can also be a little too basic. Key lime pie on the other hand reminds me of equities. It's tart and exciting and sometimes it can surprise you. Now for me, since I like having both, maybe a little more key lime, I would want my house savings in a 60/40 portfolio, which is exactly what BMO Balanced ETF ZBAL is made up of. If I had more time and could handle more risk then BMO All-Equity ETF ZEQT could be an option which is 100% equity. And what's great about BMO's asset allocation ETFs is that they offer some of the lowest management fees in Canada. So whether you're saving for your first house or retirement, there is a pie made for you.
