Sophie Prestigiacomo is an artist known for creating works that exist in close dialogue with the natural world, allowing time and environmental forces to become part of the creative process. Her series Homo Algus, installed within the marshlands of the Séné Nature Reserve in western France, features human-like figures emerging from mud, water, and surrounding vegetation, appearing as though they belong to the landscape itself. Rather than creating permanent sculptures, Prestigiacomo used materials such as clay, mud, natural fibers, and seaweed, allowing the environment to gradually transform the works over time. Algae, moss, erosion, and changing weather conditions continually reshape their appearance. The result is a haunting collection of sculptures that exists somewhere between art and nature, blurring the boundary between creation and decay as the marsh slowly reclaims each figure.
