Here are 3 signs they may be your “for now,” not your forever: 1. You’re in love with their potential more than their reality. You keep saying: “They’ll change.” “They’ll eventually understand.” “When they heal…” “When they’re ready…” “When they realize what we have…” But you’re building a future with a version of them that doesn’t exist yet. You’re not loving who they are. You’re negotiating with who you hope they become. And you cannot build a forever relationship on potential. 2. The relationship keeps requiring you to abandon yourself to keep it alive. You keep shrinking your needs. Silencing your boundaries. Accepting things that hurt you. Overexplaining your feelings. Chasing when they pull away. Doing more because you’re afraid they’ll do less. And eventually you realize something painful: You’ve been fighting to preserve the relationship by destroying your relationship with yourself. Forever shouldn’t require you to disappear. 3. You keep confusing the intensity of the connection with the health of the relationship. The chemistry is undeniable. The memories are powerful. The highs feel incredible. And the lows feel devastating. So you tell yourself: “Nobody has ever made me feel like this.” Maybe that’s true. But intense doesn’t automatically mean healthy. Sometimes your nervous system becomes attached to the uncertainty—the distance, the reunion, the relief, the fear of losing them. And because the connection feels so powerful… you assume it must be permanent. It doesn’t have to be. Some people enter your life and stay. Some enter your life and change you. Some teach you what love feels like. Some teach you what self-abandonment feels like. And some teach you the difference between the two. So before you decide someone is your forever, ask yourself: “Do I love the person standing in front of me… or am I attached to the person I believe they could become?” Because sometimes God doesn’t remove a person because the relationship meant nothing. Sometimes a relationship can be real, meaningful, and deeply loved… and still not be where your story ends. Your forever isn’t simply the person you can’t imagine losing. It’s the person you can build a healthy life with without losing yourself. And sometimes the hardest goodbye isn’t to a person. It’s to the future you already wrote with them in your head.
