“My Wife and My Mother-in-Law” (1915) by W. E. Hill At first glance, you’ll likely see a young woman looking away, wearing a feathered hat and a delicate choker. It feels like a simple, elegant portrait. But look again. That “choker” is actually the mouth of an older woman. The young woman’s jaw becomes a large nose. What looked like an ear turns into an eye. With a small shift in perspective, the image changes completely, and the young woman disappears. This famous illusion is known as an ambiguous figure, where a single image holds two interpretations at once. It shows how easily perception can change, and how the brain decides what we see before we even realize it.
