Hook
can you believe it for $800 a day these workers crouch beneath a sand barge where one wrong move could leave them buried in shifting sand. This is one of the most dangerous jobs at inland ports, unloading sand from a barge. These barges are equipped with their own unloading systems. A conveyor belt runs along the bottom of the cargo hold, while the funnel-shaped design uses gravity and gravel toward the belt automatically. But before the material reaches the conveyor, workers must carefully control the entire process to prevent thousands of pounds of damaging the belt during transportation. Wooden boards are placed above the conveyor as a protective barrier. Once unloading begins, workers use hooks to pull the sand down little by little, controlling the flow speed while removing the wooden boards one at a time. This job requires constant attention and perfect teamwork. Two workers must react quickly and coordinate every movement to prevent the conveyor from becoming blocked or overloaded. If they move too slowly or a large pile of sand suddenly collapses, the result could be extremely dangerous. The sand unloaded from these barges is mainly used for land reclamation, port construction, and other major infrastructure projects. Although it may look like a simple labor job, it actually depends on much more than strength. Workers need experience, fast reactions, and precise control to handle the moving sand safely. That's why even with $800 a day, very few people are willing to take on this dangerous challenge.
