Why has New York become known for serious subway fare evasion problems? The reason is partly because of how the system works. Passengers usually only pay when entering the station and there is often no ticket check when they exit. So some people started looking for ways to get around the gates. At first, the old waist-high turnstiles were easy to bypass. Some riders could simply push down with their hands and jump right over them. To stop this, officials added barriers to the old gates, making them harder to climb and even installed spikes on the sides. But people quickly found another weakness. Nearby emergency exits sometimes provided another way into stations without passing through the gates. So officials replaced older turnstiles with taller transparent gates to block people from jumping over. But new tricks appeared. Some people squeeze through the middle gaps while others even use small skateboards to slide underneath. Designers then continued reducing the open spaces. Now the top was harder to climb, the middle was harder to squeeze through, and the bottom was harder to crawl under. It looked like the problem was finally solved, but soon another loophole appeared. Some people covered the sensors with clothing, making the system think someone was exiting. The gate could stay open longer, creating another chance to avoid paying.
