Tretinoin and Azelaic acid are my ride or dies. Says no one in my practice. Is this guaranteed to give you glassy skin? Yeah, I feel like this combination has been overhyped by social media. Here's the 🤍 and let me tell you why. I've been practicing dermatology for 14 years and I have been prescribing Azelaic acid and Tretinoin together or separately for quite some time. When I'm seeing these videos online of how both of these medications together can give you glassy skin and glow you up, it is over promising. Tretinoin is the absolute workhorse. This will help increase cell turnover, evening out tone, texture, acne, keeping your pores nice and clear, on uneven pigmentation. You can't use this when you're pregnant. Azelaic acid. In an ideal world, it would be another workhorse. Fight me on this but I will say that Azelic acid in the real world is nowhere near the main character like Tretinoin. An equal main character to Tretinoin. Working consistently on acne, rosacea, calming down redness. Also working on hyperpigmentation. Ingredient. But in my actual practice, seeing over 100 patients a week, the results for pigmentation are modest at best. I don't recall the last 10 years even coming, my Azelic acid helped with my hyperpigmentation or my melasma! Most patients have said it's pretty subtle, the changes and if you're using it for acne blemishes. Even my patients of color come in saying, yeah, not very impressed. Pretty underwhelming results. So for stubborn hyperpigmentation, by tinted sunscreens, topical hydroquinone and retinoids. So can Tretinoin and Azelaic acid combination help with your skin? For sure. I think it will work better on acne and not so much on hyperpigmentation or melasma. Are they a guaranteed prescription for poreless glassy skin though? Absolutely not. I would say don't layer it if you have sensitive skin. So both are just overhyped expectations.
