Here is the real truth. Azelaic acid and Tretinoin should not be used at the same time. Azelaic acid is great for redness. It's great for rosacea and acne prone skin or if you're someone who gets a pigmentation left after the acne. Great for that. Tretinoin can actually reverse sun damage, help with wrinkles, fine lines, evening out skin tone as well. And Azelaic acid has no evidence to help rejuvenate the skin or help with wrinkles on that. Let's be clear on that. What it does help is even out so maybe your complexion might look better. But if you use both of them together, you're really going to set yourself up for irritated skin. So how I recommend using these two in combination to most of my patients is Azelaic acid in the morning, only if someone who is red, rosacea prone and acne prone. Not if generalized rejuvenation. And then follow that by an SPF every morning. At night, two to three times a week, apply your Tretinoin followed by a heavy duty moisturizer. And that's how you get the best results. Not by layering both of them together.
