This episode of the Dead Mall Series is a little different—we’re going back in time to the ORIGINAL Shoppers’ World in Framingham, Massachusetts. Opened in 1951, Shoppers’ World was one of the earliest suburban shopping malls in America, with its unforgettable design. Instead of the enclosed mall we know of today, Shoppers’ World had two levels of stores surrounding this massive open-air courtyard. It was not an afterthought. It was the heart of Shoppers’ World. There were fountains, gardens, entertainment and special events out here. And Christmas was something else. Giant wooden toy soldier, Santa appeared with live reindeer, and the whole place became a Christmas display. Over more than four decades, generations came here for stores like Jordan Marsh, Herman's World of Sporting Goods, Kennedy's, and later Toys "R" Us. There was even a movie theater, restaurants, and attractions that brought families here for much more than shopping. But by the time this footage was taken, you can see that Shoppers’ World was reaching the end. Stores were closing, the crowds were disappearing, and this once revolutionary shopping center was about to become part of history. The original Shoppers’ World closed in 1994 and was demolished. The courtyard disappeared, the old mall disappeared, and one of the most recognizable pieces of framingham history, the Jordan Marsh dome, well, that was gone too. But for those of us that actually walked this place, the memories didn't go with it. Do you remember the original Shoppers’ World? Tell me what you remember and follow the Dead Mall Series to see where we go next. This is a piece of history. I will never forget. The original Shoppers’ World closed in 1994 and was demolished.
