Dear Mamdani, what if artists replaced missing subway tiles with art? It started when I exited Delancey-Essex St. I noticed, hey, there's a missing E. Ironically, my name also starts with an E. What if I replaced it? I've been obsessed with imagining a post-human and post-computer world where plants reclaim spaces that were once there. In the past, I grew chia seeds on top of a ceramic vessel and grew mushrooms that seemingly burst out of one of my vases. This time, I grew chia seeds on top of a ceramic E tile that I made. This project makes me think: what if missing tiles don't become a maintenance request? What if they instead become tiny canvases for artists to fill? I might be biased, but I love the way that this E looks. A couple weeks later, I returned to the same station and filled the missing tile with my piece. I think the subway got a little bit more alive. New York City, if you see any missing tiles, report it on my website. Submit a picture, and tell me what you'd like to see. The link is in my bio. Signed with lots of hope, by Eujue.
