Whenever I talk about swallowing, someone tells me I’m taking facial care too far. But think about how often you swallow. Hundreds of times a day. Function matters when it is repeated that often. In an efficient swallow, the tongue does most of the work of controlling and moving what is inside the mouth. If your tongue isn’t doing its job properly, you may compensate with your lips, chin and cheeks, creating unnecessary muscle recruitment around the mouth. Now repeat that pattern hundreds of times. Every day. For years. This is why I care about swallowing when we talk about lip tension, chin dimpling, mouth posture, nasolabial area and the appearance of the jawline, research has linked altered tongue posture, swallowing and breathing patterns with differences in dental and craniofacial growth (changing the facial features therefore) A few minutes of facial release are wonderful. But they cannot be the entire strategy if for the other 23+ hours you keep recreating the same muscular pattern. Your face wasn’t designed to be manually massaged all day. It was designed to function. So if you want to understand your face, learn how you swallow too. Follow for more facial techniques AND the everyday functions that can keep bringing the tension back. 🤍
