At 59, the dead hang is one of the simplest exercises I refuse to overlook. No fancy equipment. No complicated setup. Just a pull-up bar and your bodyweight. And for men over 50, it can be a hell of an addition to your training. Here’s why I use them: Builds serious grip strength Your hands, forearms, and grip have to support your entire bodyweight. Grip strength becomes increasingly important as we age. Gives your back a great stretch Hanging creates traction through the spine and can feel incredible after hours of sitting, driving, or working at a desk. It’s not a cure for back pain, but it can help you feel less stiff. Improves overhead mobility Dead hangs stretch the lats and challenge your ability to comfortably get your arms overhead—something that carries over to pressing, pulling, and everyday movement. Helps counter all that sitting Most guys spend WAY too much time hunched over a desk, steering wheel, or phone. Hanging puts your shoulders, chest, and lats in the exact opposite position. Builds the foundation for stronger pull-ups If your grip gives out before your back does, your pulling strength will always be limited. Start simple: hang for as long as you can with good control, rest, and repeat for 2–3 sets. And just like any other exercise, track your time and aim to improve gradually.
