At 59, I’m not interested in proving how much punishment my body can take. I want to build muscle, stay strong, look good AND keep training for decades. These are 4 exercises I personally don’t think are worth the risk-to-reward for most men over 50: 1. Heavy Barbell Back Squats Great exercise, but you don’t NEED a barbell on your back to build strong legs. DO THIS INSTEAD: Leg press, goblet squats, hack squats or safety-bar squats. I love the leg press because I can push my quads hard, progressively overload and get close to failure without balance or spinal loading becoming the limiting factor. 2. Behind-the-Neck Lat Pulldowns They demand shoulder mobility that many guys simply don’t have anymore. DO THIS INSTEAD: Front lat pulldowns or neutral-grip pull-ups. 3. Upright Rows Some people tolerate them fine, but there are easier ways to train the delts effectively. DO THIS INSTEAD: Dumbbell or cable lateral raises. 4. Straight-Leg Sit-Ups If your goal is stronger abs, there are better ways to challenge your core without turning the movement into mostly hip flexion. DO THIS INSTEAD: Dead bugs, hanging knee raises or cable crunches. After 50, train HARD—but train SMART. Track your exercises, reps and progression so you know what’s actually working. I use Buffro to keep my workouts organized and make progressive overload easier to follow without overcomplicating things. You’re not trying to win today’s workout. You’re building a body that looks better, feels better and can still perform at 60, 70 and beyond. Download Buffro and start training with a plan built for long-term progress. #FitnessOver50 #MenOver50 #StrengthTraining #MuscleBuilding
