Two things that make the biggest difference in getting your dog to pay attention to you outside. First, use more treats than you think you need. People assume more treats means dependency, but it’s the opposite. Once a behavior is solid and generalized, it’s easy to fade them out. Trying to rush that process by rationing treats early when the new skill is still fragile means your dog isn’t likely to choose that behavior on their own. Second, your dog actually has to be in a state where they can access their brain. A dog who’s overstimulated or over threshold isn’t choosing to ignore you, they physically can’t engage the same way in that state, no amount of treats fixes that on its own. If your dog struggles to take treats or focus outside, I’ve got a free guide with the exercises I actually use, link in bio.
