For the first time, we actually have numbers on the proposed Fluidstack AI data center near Rio Hondo. The company is proposing a 1,100-plus-acre campus, and here’s what they’re putting on the public record. Each building would use 400,000 gallons of water for the initial fill of its closed-loop cooling system. During construction, they’re requesting about 50,000 gallons of water per day, followed by approximately 7,000 gallons per day once operational. Fluidstack says it would pay about $7 million for drainage improvements, plus another $20 million toward Harlingen infrastructure, if the city becomes its drainage partner. The company also says it will cover transmission lines, a substation, and required electrical upgrades. They’re projecting more than 2,500 construction jobs and several hundred permanent jobs. But before we celebrate the jobs and investment, we have to ask the important questions. Will our water or electricity bills go up? What about noise, pollution, and environmental impact? And ultimately, is the economic benefit worth the cost to our community? These are Fluidstack’s projections and commitments. Now that the numbers are public, the community can start asking questions.
