i don’t think i realized how much of my life i was planning around not being able to drive until i finally started driving. for years, i just figured out ways around it. i’d ask someone for a ride, walk, take an uber, take a train, take a bus, leave ridiculously early, spend way too much money getting somewhere… and i got really good at making it work. but “making it work” isn’t the same thing as having freedom. i hated how much time getting somewhere could take. i hated worrying about an uber cancelling. i hated being late even when i gave myself more than enough time. i hated not being able to just decide to leave somewhere and go home. and honestly, i think i got so used to it that i didn’t even realize how limiting it had become. getting my license at 32 didn’t magically make me fearless behind the wheel. i still get nervous. i still overthink things. i’m still learning. but now i can get in my car and go. i can leave when i want. i can go somewhere because i feel like it. i can change my plans. i can sit in my own car with my music and my iced coffee and just… go home. and that freedom means so much more to me than i expected it to. if you’re learning to drive later than you thought you would, i hope you know you’re not too late. i spent years thinking driving just wasn’t going to be part of my life. now i’m wondering how many things i can do that i once convinced myself weren’t for me. 🤍 #drivinganxiety #adultlearner #newdriver #drivingconfidence #independence
