3 female fantasy authors writing amazing novels, but they get increasingly more impressive. Pt. 2. 1) Susanna Clarke. I first discovered Clarke when I was looking for a shorter historical fantasy book and found Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell. I was immediately interested in the premise of 19th century England where magic is a thing of the past but is now returning, and I just fell in love with Clarke's prose. And if I didn't think that was cool enough, Piranesi came out 15 years later and easily made the New York Times 100 Best Books of the 21st Century list. 2) T. Kingfisher, who writes fantasy but unlike any author I've read before. Her novels are short and fantastical, yet steeped in the odd and sometimes delving into horror. And if that doesn't pique your interest, well, she's won a Hugo Award for about every subcategory there is. Best novel for Nettle and Bone, best novella for Thornhedge, best short story, best graphic story, the list goes on. 3) An author who hit the shelves recently and I can't wait to see how she progresses. M.L. Wang won the Self-Published Fantasy Blog-Off, which is the most prestigious contest for self-published writers by far. It's a contest by the people for the people, and Sword of Kaigen is easily the most popular out of any winner ever. The story has made people angry, made them cry, made them jump for joy. It's one of the most emotional books out there and it has some of the coolest elemental magic if that tickles your fancy. Not to mention Wang followed it up with Blood Over Bright Haven, which is a beautiful fantasy novel about the hidden repercussions of our technological age. If you've been keeping up with the news about the Congo and the devastation around cobalt mining, you're going to want to read this. So if you haven't read any of these masters of their craft, then stop watching this and get to your local bookstore. Go.
