How much did the U.S. economy grow under each president? This historical comparison examines real GDP per capita growth across 19 completed presidential terms, from Harry Truman through Joe Biden. Every president starts at 0%, allowing us to compare cumulative inflation-adjusted economic growth over the same four-year period. The animation includes economic performance during the 2008 financial crisis, the COVID-19 recession and several major economic recoveries. Republican and Democratic administrations are compared using the same economic indicator and methodology. Donald Trump’s second administration is excluded because his current presidential term is still underway. Real GDP per capita measures inflation-adjusted economic output per person. It doesn’t establish whether a president’s policies caused the observed growth. Data: U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis via FRED.
