A painted image can turn an ordinary street detail into the part that makes an artwork click. A row of bins becomes a collection of colorful skulls. An electrical box becomes part of a character. A crack in a wall gives a painted scene its unexpected twist. Instead of hiding these everyday details, artists build their ideas around them, turning overlooked objects and imperfect surfaces into essential parts of the image. The cleverness is in the connection between what’s painted and what’s already there. Remove the object, and the joke no longer works.
