Japanese police have arrested a 20-year-old U.S. Marine stationed on Okinawa on suspicion of robbery and murder in the death of 39-year-old Anna Yagi. Authorities identified the suspect as Lance Cpl. Devin Jacob Ballard, assigned to Marine Corps Air Station Futenma and III Marine Expeditionary Force. Police say Yagi was found dead at a hotel in Naha, Okinawa’s capital, after the two were seen entering together. Police allege Ballard later left alone and that Yagi’s wallet and backpack were taken. Ballard denies the allegations. He is in Japanese custody while the investigation proceeds. The Marine Corps says it is cooperating with Japanese authorities and has expressed condolences to Yagi’s family. This is bigger than one arrest because Okinawa carries most of the U.S. Marine presence in Japan. About 18,000 Japan-based Marines are stationed there. The island has long faced anger over the noise, crashes and misconduct cases tied to the U.S. military presence. In 2025, U.S. and Japanese military police began joint patrols around Naha after a series of incidents involving American service members. Japan’s prime minister has formally protested to the United States and called for tighter discipline and measures to prevent a repeat. The facts will be decided in the Japanese justice system. But the damage to public trust begins immediately. #japan #marines #USMC #miltok #military
