How long are federal prison sentences for different crimes? I compared 30 years of U.S. federal sentencing data from 1996 through 2025 for murder, sexual abuse, kidnapping, robbery, drug trafficking, firearms, assault, manslaughter, arson and immigration offenses. In 2025, the average federal sentence was about 23.8 years for murder, 19.2 years for sexual abuse and 15.2 years for kidnapping. The chart also shows how sentencing changed over time, including a major rise in sexual-abuse sentences and much lower immigration sentences. These are federal sentencing averages, not all U.S. criminal cases. The U.S. Sentencing Commission also changed its offense-classification methodology in 2018, so some comparisons across that breakpoint require caution.
