A Developer Got An AI Depth Model Running Entirely On The GPU In Real Time Software engineer Konrad Reczko built a real-time AI depth-estimation system using TypeGPU, demonstrating how machine learning and graphics rendering can work together directly on the GPU. The system estimates depth from a single camera image, helping a computer understand which parts of a scene are closer or farther away. Reczko reported running a 448 × 448 monocular depth model in approximately 8 milliseconds on an Apple M4 Pro. Because the AI inference runs directly through GPU compute, its depth output can feed straight into a lighting pass without leaving the GPU or requiring extra CPU synchronization. That makes it possible to combine AI inference, depth-aware lighting and rendering in a real-time graphics pipeline. The result is more than a depth-map demo. It shows how developers can combine AI and real-time visual effects in the same GPU workflow, opening up possibilities for interactive graphics, visual effects and other applications that need fast scene understanding. ⚠️ DISCLAIMER Video credit: Konrad Reczko (reczko_konrad on X).
