Why it worked

The video leverages high-stakes engineering claims and the charismatic presence of Elon Musk to create a sense of awe and curiosity about the future of automotive performance.

Summary

Elon Musk discusses the acceleration capabilities of the Tesla Roadster, specifically its ability to go from 0 to 60 mph in 0.81 seconds using rocket thrusters. The video features a simulation of the car's performance and a conversation about the extreme speed and potential physical impact on passengers.

Structure

1Elon Musk discusses the 0-60 acceleration time of the Tesla Roadster
2A simulation of the car's rocket thrusters is shown
3The technical details of the thrust and speed are explained

Original caption

Elon Musk pushed the limits! 🚀 0 to 60 in .81 seconds with rocket thrusters. Could break the system (or humans!) trying to go faster. #ElonMusk #RocketCar #SpeedChallenge #Innovation #Engineering #FastCars

Product placement

Tesla Roadster: (a) ACTS — it is the subject of the speed test, its rocket thrusters are shown in a simulation, and its performance is discussed by Elon Musk. Removing it would change the entire video. Tesla: (b) APPEARS — logo on Elon Musk's shirt and on the screen during the test. Removing it would not change the video.

ROADSTER: 0-60 IN JUST 0.81 SECONDS? HOW FAST DID YOU WANNA GO TO 0-60? I CAN'T REMEMBER YOU GOTTA BREAK ONE SECOND OBVIOUSLY I TESTED THIS THE OTHER DAY CAN WE PUT IT UP GUYS? CAN WE PUT THE TEST UP? 00:00:00:00 THIS GOES FAST WE HAVE A CAR OUT THERE CAN YOU PUT IT ON THE MAX? LET'S TRY AND BEAT ONE SECOND WE DIDN'T HAVE A WHOLE LOT OF ROOM OUT ON THE PAD SO WE HAD TO CUT IT SHORT BUT DO WE HAVE A LIVE TIME? ELON MENTIONED THE ROCKET THRUSTERS YOU CAN SEE THE THRUST IS EXITING THE BACK OF THE 4 THRUSTERS FASTER THAN THE SPEED OF SOUND SO YOU SEE THE MACH DIAMONDS IT ACTUALLY CREATES OVER 80 KILONEWTONS OF THRUST I THINK WE BROKE THE SYSTEM WE DIDN'T DO IT IN .17 SECONDS YEAH OKAY THAT'S .1 SECONDS I THINK WE'D DESTROY THE HUMAN IF WE DID THAT AH THERE YOU GO .81 SECONDS AND WE ANTICIPATE BEING ABLE TO DO BETTER THAN THAT

Transcript

Elon, how fast did you wanna go to 0-60? I can't remember. Well, you gotta break one second. Obviously. I tested this the other day. Can we put it up guys? Can we put the test up? Like this, this goes fast. Hey guys, we have a car out there, right? Don't we have a car out there? Can you put it on the max? Let's try and beat one second. We didn't have a whole lot of room out on the pad, so we had to cut it short, but do we have a live time? Elon mentioned the rocket thrusters. You can see the thrust is exiting the back of the 4 thrusters faster than the speed of sound, so you see the Mach diamonds. It actually creates over 80 kilonewtons of thrust. I think we broke the system. We didn't do it in .17 seconds. Yeah, okay, that's .1 seconds. I think we'd destroy the human if we did that. Ah, there you go. .81 seconds. All right, there you go. That's work. We'll do, and we anticipate being able to do better than that.
