In 1967, Volkswagen released one of the most brilliant commercials in advertising history. The premise was simple: two neighbors were given the exact same $3,000 budget. Mr. Jones spent his entire budget on a single luxury car. Mr. Krempler, on the other hand, spent his $3,000 on a brand-new Volkswagen Beetle, a refrigerator, a range, a wasner, a dryer, a record player, and two television sets. The famous punchline? The announcer noted that Mr. Jones now had a whole new problem: keeping up with the Kremplers. Instead of flexing luxury, VW used pure humor and logic to prove just how much value the Beetle offered everyday families. If you had $3,000 in 1967, which route would you have taken?
