High school sweethearts Leah Fonte and Shane Hirstius, both 21, were killed in an alleged DUI hit-and-run in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, early Sunday morning. The engaged couple was walking along the side of a road when police say 20-year-old Mia Dawson veered off the roadway and struck them. Fonte, a senior at LSU studying biological sciences, died at the scene. Hirstius, a volunteer firefighter, was rushed to a hospital, where he later died. Dawson was arrested on charges including vehicular homicide, impaired driving and hit-and-run. The River Ridge Volunteer Fire Department remembered Hirstius as someone with "an enormous heart, an unforgettable smile, and a genuine passion for helping others."
