🌹 How to Grow Roses from Seed | Rose Hips & Cold Stratification Want to grow your own roses from seed? Here’s exactly how I collect, clean, and prepare rose seeds for germination! STEP 1 — Harvest Your Rose Hips Collect mature rose hips that have turned orange or red. These are the fruits that develop after roses are pollinated. STEP 2 — Remove the Seeds Carefully slice each rose hip lengthwise. Gently pull it apart and separate the seeds from the surrounding pulp, being careful not to damage them. STEP 3 — Clean Your Seeds Place the seeds in a fine strainer and rinse thoroughly with clean water. Remove as much remaining pulp as possible to reduce the risk of mold. STEP 4 — Prepare Your Vermiculite For my batch, I used: * Approximately ½ cup vermiculite * Approximately 1 fluid ounce of water Mix thoroughly. Your vermiculite should be damp, NOT soaking wet. When squeezed, it should hold moisture without dripping water. STEP 5 — Arrange Your Seeds Add a thin layer of damp vermiculite to the bottom of a clean container. Place your seeds approximately ½ inch apart, then gently cover them with the remaining damp vermiculite. STEP 6 — Label Everything! Always label your container with the rose variety or parent plant and the date. Trust me, you won’t remember which seeds are which months later! STEP 7 — Cold Stratification Cover your container and place it in the refrigerator. * Temperature: 35–40°F * Duration: Approximately 3–4 months * Keep the medium slightly moist, never waterlogged. * Check periodically for mold or early germination. Cold stratification mimics winter conditions and helps many rose seeds overcome dormancy. STEP 8 — Plant Your Seeds After the appropriate cold treatment, plant your seeds approximately ¼ inch deep in a well-draining seed-starting mix. Keep them moist and provide warmth and good light as they germinate. IMPORTANT: Rose seeds don’t always grow into plants identical to their parents. Every seedling can have different characteristics, and germination times and success rates vary. SAVE THIS VIDEO so you can follow these steps when you’re ready to grow roses from seed!
