I've run 31 marathons. I've run marathons all over the place. New York City is not the hardest, it's the meanest. Like, here's an idea, here's an idea. Let's have the first mile and a half be straight uphill, going up the Verrazano. Let's have the next mile and a half straight downhill. Good luck finding your pace. Then let's let the runners settle in to this calm 8 to 10 mile stretch through Brooklyn. That's flat. Then the minute they're settling in, let's put them on this overpass on the BQE here. And then let's send them straight up the Queensboro Bridge at mile 17 so their quads start to explode. And then let's have the downhill be straight down. And then this long falls flat up First Avenue, right when their confidence they're like, 'I'm almost there.' You're not almost there. You got another ten miles to go. Then you go into the Bronx and you're like, 'Okay, I've got it.' And then you start to see Central Park and you're like, 'I made it back to the park.' You're not done. That's where the hardest part is. Then you have three more miles of uphill. Then you go to Central Park South. It's uphill! And then you go to right here, you go to Columbus Circle, you think you're at the finish line, it says mile 26. The finish line right here, right there at Tavern on the Green. The finish line is uphill. Greatest marathon in the world.
