Have you heard of sumo wrestling? Well, sumo wrestling has gained popularity in gaming industry for quite some time now. If you play Street Fighter, you know E. Honda is a honorable sumo wrestler. We decided to check out this pop-up event called Sumo and Sushi in Washington Heights. I was surprised to see so many people are interested in sumo and I was definitely excited to learn more about it. We were greeted by our host, Konishiki, who is the first non-Japanese born wrestler. He gave us a pretty extensive intro to sumo. Sumo wrestling is a traditional Japanese sports that dates back hundreds of years. All the wrestlers came on stage and take off their robe and show off their mawashi. Mawashi is a traditional outfit that they wear during the match. This piece of garment is make of silk and it can be quite elaborate. We also learned that the average wrestler weights about 250 lbs to 400 lbs. The host gave us some ideas about how wrestlers stretch. And the objective is to force your opponents out of the ring to make any parts of your body and other than the sole of their feet touch the ground. At the end of the match, they even have the wrestlers to wrestle the real-life audience, which is very entertaining and look at this guy, he literally just got lifted up by his favorite wrestler. Look how exciting everyone gets. It was such a cool experience. At the end we get to check out some of the souvenirs. Look at the T-shirts. We ended up having ramen for dinner.
