How to be prepared if your spouse dies
Have the tough conversations now. Don't wait to ask about their life support wishes, or their funeral preferences, or the details of their will.
Talk about it, then write it down. You won't want to try to remember their wishes from memory when you're in a state of grief.
Do the boring stuff. If you're not on your spouse's bank account, be added as a POD. Make sure their will is legally binding. Ensure you are the beneficiary to their life insurance policy.
Have an honest conversation and know what your spouse takes care of for the household. Do they pay they bills and subscriptions? Make sure you know which bills are on auto pay, what credit card they're paid through, when and how often they're paid.
You don't want your water shutting off because that was the one bill your spouse had to pay manually each month.
Does your spouse take on the main responsibility for the kids? Make sure you know who their pediatrician is, their teachers name and contact information, what park is your kids favorite, the login information for your kids online school portal, how to make sure they have lunch money on their account.
Write down all of the passwords and codes used in your household. This will ensure you're not locked out of the safe in the basement and that you'll still be able to login to Netflix, use your Costco account, and be able to cancel any subscriptions your spouse used but you didn't.
This is a lot, I know. But there is SO MUCH MORE. That's why I'm building IvorySafe, so you know what information to gather now AND have a secure place to gather it.
