How will we interact with social media next year? *A theory* by triangulating signals from the CEO of Instagram, the president of Shopify and several of Open AI's recent partnerships. I'm convinced that in 2026, social media, but especially Instagram is headed for dialogical algorithms. And technically I just made up this term, but what I mean by dialogical is a two-way ongoing conversation, much like you would have with an LLM. But let's talk about it. Up until nowish, algorithms have felt kind of like black box overlords that we don't wanna mess with, that can be angered or and ultimately terrifying. And ultimately control the economic fate of global businesses and brands, both commercial and personal, which is obviously a lot of power to wield and therefore potential grounds for unrest amongst users. But in late September, Adam Israeli announced that Instagram would begin testing a new feature to tune your algorithm based on topics, which a lot of people compared to the current customization feature on TikTok. And in early October, Harley Finkelstein, president of Shopify announced their partnership with Open AI and introduced conversation driven commerce as the new way to sell. And a new video just popped up in my for you feed confirming that she has been one of these early guinea pigs for Instagram testing this new customization feature. So to me, this is a lot of supporting evidence that social media, but also online life in general will soon be one long conversation, likely with a variety of AI agents that we pick up and put down. Right now the customization part has been confirmed by Masari himself. And the conversational part is just my prediction. But I think we're very close to logging into sharing some thoughts off the dome with your unique algorithm and then answering some of its questions for you to help steer the scroll of the day. What do you think? Do you agree that we're headed for dialogical algorithms?
