Stop setting $10,000 as your emergency fund just because the number is popular and that's what you're hearing on TikTok. Here's how much you should actually have. Your emergency fund isn't supposed to be a cute round number. It is supposed to be a number based on your bare bone essentials. That means the cheapest version of your life that keeps you fed, housed, safe and functioning. Think rent, mortgage, utilities, groceries, insurance, medications, phone, internet, transportation. That is it. No eating out, no beauty appointments, nothing for fun, and no subscriptions, just the essentials. Now you're gonna add up how much all those essentials cost for you for one month and you're gonna times that by either 3, 4, 5 or 6 and that is how much your emergency fund should be. For some people, it may be 4k, it may be 7k, it could be 12k, it may even be 20k or more. What's most important is that your emergency fund number matches your lifestyle and not anyone else's. Once you reach your emergency fund goal, go wild. You can put more into it if you want, but start with the bare minimum number.
