Finance For Idiots
Their other posts in the index, biggest breakout first.
Hi my name is Will and if I wanted to start over in college these are the five things I would do to help myself with a finance career. Watch until the end for a tip you've never heard before. Number one and this is a big umbrella networking. Talk to people who are in your major, talk to alumni, there's alumni features on LinkedIn and Handshake, talk to your professors and make friends and join clubs. Number two, research other fields and career paths. It's not just investment banking, it's not just being a financial analyst, there's many other roles and careers that can suit you well professionally. Number three, stay up to date in the market. I had an interview today with a guy and he was asking me a lot about what's the market doing, what have you seen this week, and if you're just stumbling and you don't know what to say, it's not a very good look because it means maybe you're not passionate about the field. Number four, get and look into different finance certifications that go with your career path. Right now I'm studying for the SIE, it doesn't exactly go with what I want but it will help me break into the field. But look at things like the Series 65, the Series 66, if you're an accountant try looking at the CPA in order to get a better role. Number five and this was one I didn't know until recently, cold email and cold call. Some employers will not respond unless you email 2-3-5 times and not once, not twice, maybe three, four or even five times. I talked to the CEO of a company today and he told me that he did not respond to a guy until he emailed him five times. This shows persistence but also these people are busy guys and if you only email them once and you never email them again, they're going to assume you don't actually want the role and you're not actually interested in the company. My name is Will, this is Finance for Idiots and stay tuned and follow me for more market updates and more advice.
