This is happening because of AI, let me explain. So Angine de Poitrine are breaking the internet right now and if you're geeky about music you've almost certainly seen this land in your feed. So I'm gonna explain what's going on here, why people find it interesting and why it's happening now coincidentally at almost exactly the same time that AI-produced music has gone mainstream. So let's look at three things: the music, their style and AI. So the reason that music geeks are loving this is because they're breaking the rules of music in very clever ways. They're using weird time signatures meaning that sometimes a bar has 4 beats, sometimes 7, sometimes 14. Well they're also using a microtonal scale so instead of just the 12 notes that we know and love in Western music they're using twice as many notes and their guitars have twice as many frets. So now they're playing these new notes that are halfway between the ones that we hear all the time and that's what makes it sound kind of new and unexpected. So they also create very complex arrangements by using a loop pedal which allows just that one person to layer their playing as they progress through the song which makes it sound like the whole band playing and he's controlling that loop pedal with his feet and toes which is just really impressive in itself and they do it all really skillfully. So that's the music, but their appearance is important too. It often gets described as being Dadaist. And if you don't know, Dadaism was an art movement about 100 years ago which ultimately led to surrealism and it was all about incongruity, about things that didn't belong together, things that broke the rules of what the viewer expected. It was even the birth of the whole "what is art?" debate. And it's interesting that Dadaism back then was a direct response to the machinery of war and of modern life and that's probably what's happening now. If you go back even further, look at the effect that photography had on art and how once that anyone could create images using this simple little machine art changed radically. Painters stopped trying to depict what was in front of them as perfectly as possible, figurative art, because what's the point? And they got more creative with impressionism and ultimately that led to Dadaism, Expressionism, Cubism... because what is the point of trying to paint what's in front of you perfectly when you can just take a photo? And that freed artists, it actually pushed them to do something more interesting with their paintbrush. Because right now in Google Gemini as of this month anyone can create fully produced music tracks with just a text prompt. Modern music is unbelievably formulaic and AI is trained on those formulas. So we've got an AI that's trained on that, is pumping out more of that and that just forces us to walk away from it and break those rules and find different territory and that's what Angine de Poitrine have done really well. To be fair, if you spend any time going beyond mainstream music artists have been breaking the rules for a very long time, of course, but what this shows and particularly go and look at the YouTube video, go and look at the comments on this YouTube video that's gone viral and you will just witness how encouraged everybody is by the plight of humanity and human creativity in the face of AI slop.
