For the first time ever, I send off an email to rescind a job application. Because I just had an interview, and I think I've seen enough. I don't want to work with my interviewer, honestly, I just don't want to. He'll find somebody, I'm sure, okay, but it won't be me. So I just sent my email to the recruiter. I feel bad, honestly, to the recruiter, but I mean, I'm sure they got plenty of people. So whatever, I'm just going to continue applying to other places and just continuing the process. But yeah, I never thought I would do this. I never thought I'd get to this point. I've never needed to rescind an application, you know? If I didn't get a job, it would be due to my failing, you know? I didn't do as well, or somebody was just better than me. Maybe I didn't necessarily fail, but somebody just happened to perform better than me or fit the role better, whatever. That's been typically the scenario. But this time around, I've seen enough. I don't want to work. I don't want to work with the person that I just was in an interview with. So, yeah, I mean, listen, it wasn't anything, like I wasn't harassed or anything like that, I wasn't insulted or anything like that. However, this was meant to be a 20-minute initial screen, and I emailed the recruiter, I asked for clarification. I asked, is there any technical component to this? So I can know, so I can prepare, right? To do my best. Like I really want to do my best to showcase my skill sets the best that I can, right? Um, and it's only 20 minutes, so I didn't, I didn't think anything of it necessarily, but who knows, right? It's a startup, so you never know. The recruiter literally texts, like, emails me back and says, no, just come as you are. It's a casual chat about your experiences and the job itself if you have questions, right? And I was like, okay, cool. That's very typical. I know what to do. That's fine. Um, very normal to have that first sort of screen call, right? And so I join on Zoom. It's like 4:00 p.m. on a Monday. The interviewer is a data engineer, um, and he introduces himself, I introduce myself, and he says, by the way, I read the email chain. I know that you clarified that there'd be no technical aspect, but guess what there is. It's a SQL interview. And we have like 15 minutes left or something. And I'm just like, gob-smacked. I'm like, what? Because this is just not how I operate. And this is really the crux of the issue. I'm, I have a suspicion our personalities are not going to work well together. Because I'm a very organized, very structured, and very communicative person. You can tell. I clarified, I wanted to know what type exactly of interview is this, right? That's the type of person I am. Um, this dude, he just said in the, like he saw it, but did not think to chime in, to let me know, um, did not think that maybe we could reschedule this. He said, in the interest of time, let's just try it. And I'm like, all right, but you can definitely tell that I'm not into it. Like very obvious, okay? I have a very loud face. So anyway, he sends me the link to the Google Doc, and I open it up. I even asked him, like, is it a simple SQL query? Like, you know, I'm expecting something small because we don't have that much time. And he says, no, frankly, it's, it's more complicated. And I'm like, oh, okay. So you can imagine, I'm like, stressed now. I'm like, nervous now, right? Like this isn't, this is officially interview now. So, yeah, I look at it. And like, listen, okay, listen, like I've done SQL before. This is nothing new to me. Um, it's very much like an aggregation. It's like top three, last 30 days. There's a few tables you got to join, whatever, right? Okay, I get it. But in that moment, I was so not prepared for that at all. I like tried a little bit. I gave it my best, you know? I even like wrote down some rudimentary SQL, but I, I gave up. A straight up I gave up. And, um, I just genuinely feel like I wasn't really given a fair chance. And I don't vibe with that. I'm sorry, I just don't vibe with that. I think it should have been obvious to just tell me to just reschedule, even if it were like the next day or something. Like give me that opportunity, let me know, don't make that decision for me. I don't like that. So, anyway, um, I try to be nice. Listen, like I said, loud face, so there's only so much I can do. But I wasn't like yelling at him or anything. I mean, I was getting frustrated when I was writing the SQL, I'll tell you that. Like I did sigh dramatically a little bit maybe. I need to not do that. But, um, but then he asked me like, oh, do you have any questions about the role? And, uh, at this point, I'm just like, well, you want to be frank, I'll be frank, like, I didn't say it like that. But I asked him like, did, did you expect me to finish that? Like, am I basically already out? Am I screened out? You know what I mean? And he said, well, yes, frankly, or candidly, he said, um, I, I did expect you to finish that. I'm like, okay. Um, and, yeah, you know, I just asked him a few questions about the role. The company's cool, you know? I was excited. My friend recommended it, which is why, like, I'm super disappointed right now, to be honest with you. Um, and we get into, like, the interview process. Turns out there'd be an hour-long SQL interview after this, even though he literally said SQL is only 10% of the job, but whatever. I mean, that's your choice, dude, I guess. Um, and then there'd be like two days on-site and a presentation, which I've also, like, I've never done a presentation as for an interview, but, okay. Um, so anyway, all of this is like very new to me, okay? Um, and then like I'm just trying to be nice, just to end it on a positive note, even though I'm like, low-key acting, you know, I should like get an Oscar at this point. And I just ask about like scheduling, like, oh, how is it? Like I'm asking for like time frame, you know? And he says like, oh, if you pass, like after this, like if you pass, like I need to think about it. Obviously, my friend. Obviously. That was clear. I'm being nice. Now I'm not feeling nice. And I remember I said bye, and I really just like stared at him. I was like, bye. I didn't like thank him for the experience or anything. He by the way didn't apologize once, um, even though this was his fuck up, to be honest. If you're watching, dude, I mean, I just rescinded, so yeah, I just sent the email. I said, thank you for taking the time to coordinate this interview for me. After reflecting on the experience, I've decided to withdraw my application for this particular role. I do think, insert company, is a very exciting company. I don't want to like badmouth them, you know? So I appreciate the opportunity and wish you and the team all the best moving forward. Thank you.
