Every retail store has a checkout counter where you wait in line to pay, and Apple removed them completely in 2011. But here's the crazy part. By removing these checkouts, it made them the highest earning retail stores in the world. And let me tell you the story. This is Ron Johnson, Apple's former retail chief. And in the early 2000s, he noticed something weird happening in Apple stores. Customers like to play with the products for about 20 minutes, fall in love with them, and then they see the long checkout line and just leave. This exact friction of waiting in line was destroying their sales. People wanted the product, but they didn't want to wait in line. So in 2011, Apple made a radical move. They decided to get rid of all of checkout counters entirely. And instead, every employee got a mobile device that could process payments anywhere in the store. So when you grab the product, any employee can check you out on the spot and you leave. There's no lines, no waiting, and there's no friction. And here's what happened. Apple stores became the most profitable retail stores per square foot in America. They make over $5,500 per square foot, and the average small store makes about $300. That's about 18 times more revenue in the same space. So what's the lesson here? Every point of friction in your sales process is costing you money. The easier you make it for people to buy, the more that people will buy. So that means remove some unnecessary steps, cut down on forms, make your checkouts more instant, and any extra click or wait time is a chance for your customers to change their mind.
