Appealing financial aid is actually really common, but most students don't do it effectively. Let me break down the process. Step 1: act quickly, but strategically. Don't wait until the last minute. Send in your appeal letter a few weeks before the May 1st deadline. This gives financial aid offices time to review and respond before you commit to the deadline. But if you pass the deadline, don't worry. I actually sent in my letter after I committed to my university and got around $30,000 in financial aid. It is possible, but just in general, the earlier the better. Step 2: identify valid reasons for appeal. Strong appeals could sometimes involve competing offers from similar schools, changing special circumstances, which is what I leveraged, special expenses not captured by FAFSA, and errors in your financial aid application. And step 3: gather supporting documentation.
