Spirit Airlines is done. Not bankrupt, not restructuring, they are shutting down. They canceled every single flight this morning and now 17,000 employees are left without jobs. This might seem very sudden and random, but is it? Here is how this happened. Hi, I'm Natalie. I'm the founder of a startup and you can follow me for more tech and business lore that you can't ignore. Over the past four years, Spirit has lost over 2.1 billion dollars. Their business model is to charge very little for the actual airfare and then charge for everything else. This worked when they had cost advantage, but all of the other major airlines like Delta, United, American, all introduced basic economy fares at similar price points but with more included. They had a bigger network, they had free Wi-Fi, a lot of people had airline loyalty to these networks. It didn't help that in 2023 they had an engine defect that grounded dozens of planes and their 3.8 billion dollar Jet Blue merger got denied by the Biden DOJ on anti trust grounds. This was blocked in order to protect budget consumers, then in 2024 they filed for bankruptcy. They restructured and they filed again in August of 2025 and the final blow was the conflict with Iran that made oil prices increase by over double of what they projected. They went to the current administration for a 500 million dollar bailout. When Spirit needed to borrow money over the years they issued bonds, basically loans from investors that they promised they'll pay back with interest and because of that their bond holders legally have to approve any restructuring deals because their money is on the line. Ken Griffin's hedge fund Citadel had bought up a huge chunk of those bonds when Spirit was very low on cash and so unfortunately they blocked this bailout and that was it. 17,000 jobs gone, 72 airports just lost a cheap option and any routes that Spirit flew are probably going to get a lot more expensive for everyone. So regardless of if you flew Spirit or not, this is just a sad day overall for the airline industry.
