10 industrial communication protocols every PLC beginner should know. Number one Modbus. Modbus is a serial-based communication protocol. Simple, open, and everywhere. If you're connecting PLCs, VFDs, meters, or sensors, you've seen Modbus. Number two Profibus. A classic fieldbus protocol widely used in European automation systems. This open standard uses cyclic communication with a layered model, and supports serial, fiber optics, and Ethernet. It is widely used in factory automation, process control, and power applications. Number three Ethernet/IP. Ethernet/IP uses Ethernet for high-speed control and device connectivity. It supports multiple data rates and topologies, making it ideal for connecting PLCs, HMIs, sensors, and drives in motion control systems. Number four EtherCAT. EtherCAT is an ultra-fast, real-time, and highly deterministic Ethernet fieldbus. It supports complex topologies, ideal for high-speed, high-performance automation systems. Number five Profinet. Another Ethernet-based protocol, supports real-time and non-real-time communication, and can integrate seamlessly with Profibus. Used in production automation, process automation, and machine building. Number six CAN, or Controller Area Network. It is the embedded champion for real-time data in automotive and robotics. It provides high-speed, reliable multi-node communication and is suitable for small to medium control systems. Number seven DeviceNet. Based on CAN bus technology, DeviceNet offers a simple, multi-master network that provides both power and communication over the same cable. It's ideal for connecting drives, sensors, and actuators in small to medium control systems. Number eight CC-Link. Based on RS485 and Ethernet communication, it delivers high-speed, scalable communication for automation equipment, machine tools, robots, PLCs, and distributed control systems. It's simple to program, but often higher in cost. Number nine CC-Link IE. CC-Link IE is the Ethernet-based version of CC-Link. It supports data rates up to 1 Gbps and can handle up to 121 nodes on a single network. Designed for large distributed control systems in the same demanding applications. Number 10 OPC. OPC, especially OPC UA, is the data integration layer that lets different systems and software platforms share data in a secure, vendor-neutral way.
