I'm finally getting a rat. Let me guess. You'll call him Remy? Yes, chef! But, how much will you budget? Not this again. First, cage setup. Easily $100 for something multi-level and sturdy. I have my old hamster cage. Rats need way more space than that. They're also escape artists. And need clutter. We won't be messy! No, I mean lots and lots of stuff in their cage. Tunnels, dig boxes, platforms... They love to climb. Their teeth literally never stop growing. And also, bedding and cage cleaning. I can get shredded paper for free. Try hemp bedding to absorb smells. It's $30-ish for a bag. Or, hear me out. I'll just potty train my little chef! You could. Which leads us to diet. $20 a month for rat food, fresh fruits and veggies. The ingredients for ratatouille?! You do know an animated movie is not real life, right? To Remy, it is! And what's that one? Emergency fund. They can get respiratory infections pretty easily, so save up for vet visits. And all this? A few hundred dollars. Totally worth it! For your chefs. What?! Rats shouldn't live alone, so you'll need Remy... and Linguini!
