Their other posts in the index, biggest breakout first.
You say unbox my new Chanel with me. Just kidding. I would never do that. Anyone can do that. But what not everyone can do is talk to you about what it's like to be a fashion journalist who receives a lot of press kits. Do you know what a press kit is? We're going to get into that. I'm also going to tell you a little story time about my very first Chanel show at the tender age of 23 in Tokyo. So stick around. First things first, I've noticed editors call these press kits as I do. Influencers say PR. Celebrities used to call this swag. Not sure if they still do. But the way it ends up in your hot little hands is always the same. A PR representative either in-house at the brand or someone that they've hired externally will reach out to try to incentivize you to cover their new launch and ask for your address to send you samples. And there's quite often an element of presentation and packaging and thoughtfulness that goes into these, which we can see Chanel did with this navy blue attaché number, which matches what I presume is their signature men's fragrance, Bleu de Chanel. Not a beauty editor, but I'm getting the memo. Literally. So while I know Chanel would like me to just talk about this perfume, I'm not going to do that. I want to give you the little bit of insider baseball here. This is like a little souvenir. I don't know if this is real leather or not. It's not branded besides the double C with other Chanel branding, and that is so it doesn't retain the same kind of value, similarly to, you know, makeup bags that you might get of a gift with purchase at the Chanel counter are different than a Chanel leather good that you would buy as part of their like handbag collection. Some editors will give these away, they'll reuse them. I'm going to use this for my laptop actually because this is my work bag that I often carry my laptop in, which is a well-worn, beautifully beat up, just gets better and better with age. I believe this is called the Supermodel style, which is from 1996 or 1997, aka the golden years of Chanel in my opinion, and I keep my laptop in there. That fits nicely. They're kind of a cool thing. Sometimes they're almost like memorabilia and I'll keep really special invites or pieces when I used to go to the Fendi shows in Milan when Karl Lagerfeld was the designer, he would provide beautiful watercolor sketches of the collection on every person's seat and I would always keep them. Well, let's look at what's inside this envelope. So I guess this is the QR code for the film starring Jacob Elordi for Bleu de Chanel. Positions him as a kind of action star. I saw various headlines questioning if this meant that he was going to be the next James Bond. I believe it was directed by Alfonso Cuarón. Did I just make that name up? I don't think so. But this is information that I've retained from other people that I've seen that have covered this because they've received press releases and press kits like this. Also inside, I think this is a massive Jacob Elordi poster. This is huge. I'm not sure what I meant to do with this. I don't think my husband would love for this to just randomly appear on the wall. Anyways, this is just a stream of consciousness. I also want to point out that the contrarian in me, I was like, not wearing Chanel for this. No saree. I'm wearing archival McQueen. This is from like 2006, so Lee McQueen was still with us. Anyways, back to the Bleu de Chanel of it all. Sometimes in these press kits they actually provide materials with the scent notes. I didn't get that. But this is not a new scent for Chanel. I think it's a new campaign. Right out of the gate, I really like this bottle. All this packaging, the black and the navy, really reminds me of a total Chanel signature. I have a bag here that proves it. Again is another golden moment in Chanel because this is from 2017, which is one of Karl Lagerfeld's last collections. You can see it's a bit blown out on camera here. It's a lot darker in real life. Black and navy denim and leather combo. I love how you can actually fit it with quite a bit and it's not so structured. Oh, I have in there. Oh, Mimi Cheng's dumplings. Oh, I have a coupon for these. As you can see to my earlier point, true authentic Chanel products always have Chanel branding on the inside, right? This is the type of Chanel bag that never is in or out of style. It's just very classic, very Karl Lagerfeld and it's still within the house's lexicon. I don't think like the blaziness of it all has really gotten to the beauty positioning yet. Speaking of positioning that you can still hear me in my mic here. Let's give my first impressions of that scent. First I was worried it would be a bit duty free, but it's not. It's quite nice. Very clean, very hygienic, very fresh. This is a bit of a new car scent to me in the way that I actually use Chanel in my current vehicle right now, which is a Defender. Newer Defender. I use Chanel Number 19, which is one of my favorite scents from Chanel. I love Cuir de Russie. I love Sycomore and I love Number 19. I think that this would be a brilliant scent. I think it would be nice on a man too because it is intended as a men's cologne. But to spray in your car or like on your air conditioners or your air vents, this smells like you got your shit together. Which perhaps I don't as I've already run out of time. But my very first Chanel show was Spring 2012 Couture, which was a replay that they mounted in the Shinjuku National Garden in Tokyo. I was a junior editor at a fashion magazine at the time and last minute my manager couldn't go, so in like less than 48 hours notice, I was sent to Tokyo. I was so excited I didn't sleep on the 16-hour flight, cried profusely at the finale and then was taken under the wing by one of Karl Lagerfeld's bodyguards because I was the only Canadian journalist there, so I didn't have any friends. I also think he took pity on me because I asked Karl Lagerfeld a question at the press conference in front of thousands of journalists and he didn't like the question and shut me down. All in a day's work my friends, and that wraps your news fash.
