How to Apply For -Girls State- a program where less than 1% of juniors attend What is Girls State? ALA Girls State is a prestigious week-long immersion program focused on government and the power of civic engagement. Delegates (Citizens) form their own mock government, run for office, and debate legislation, all while building a network of high- achieving peers from across the state. Basic Requirements 1. Academic Standing: Must be a high school Junior (entering Senior year in the fall). 2. Leadership Qualities: Strong interest in government, law, or public service. 3. Citizen Status: U.S. Citizen or legal resident. 4. Character: High moral character and strong academic record. Find Your ALA Unit Use the ALA national website to find the auxiliary units nearest to your home or school & reach out via email, stating your interest in volunteering. By volunteering at the ALA, you demonstrate your commitment to their mission before you even ask for a nomination. This builds trust with the staff. Connect The Dots Most ALA units coordinate with high school guidance counselors to select nominees. Your Action: Set a meeting with your counselor. Explain your interest and inform them that you've already made contact with the local ALA Unit. This shows self advocacy & maturity/initiative. The Application Unlike most summer programs, ALA Girls State is decentralized. Selection processes, forms, and standards are set by the local Unit level, not just the state. Each American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Unit is its own organization. They decide how to fund, interview, and select the girls they sponsor for the state session. I personally had essays. Dm me if you want me to share them with you. The Interview Can range from a casual one-on- one coffee chat with a Unit member to a formal panel of 3-5 judges. Expect questions on government structure, current state events, and your leadership experience. They want delegates who will represent their Unit with poise and energy. Also, they love women empowerment. Why Girls State? It is widely recognized by top universities as one of the most rigorous and prestigious leadership programs in the United States. Only one junior girl from your school gets selected.
