If you want to uplevel your career, here's a single highest lever you can pull. And that is visibility. When I was starting my career, I used to think that my work would speak for itself. So I was like, I'll just be heads down, do good work, and my work will speak for itself. I learned the hard way that unfortunately, it does not work that way. Visibility and your personal brand is extremely important to move up in your career. Here's a conversation that I had with a coworker today. A mid-level engineer, she's gonna push her to speak up and make herself visible. She says, do you think it would be worth debriefing, consolidating learnings, me you and others who migrated endpoints? I don't want to pile on another meeting, doc, thoughts? Lora, yes, let's do it. Start a doc and let's add notes. Sounds good. Okay, up until that point. And then I was like, post in the broader channel with the intent for viz and others' input. LMAO. You had a great idea. Share it out so others can see. Two, this isn't only great for yourself, but it's also great for the org. It fosters collaboration. It's a great way to disseminate information and it allows you to get input from other bright folks on your team. As you get more senior, you want to broaden your impact and you want to increase scope. And putting yourself out there, putting your thoughts and ideas out there is a great way to do that. That alone will take you so far.
