A common misconception is that PON is an acronym, but it actually isn’t. Pon is a mineral mix substrate that became popular through this brand “Lechuza”, and many growers now use the term to describe similar mixes made from pumice, zeolites, lava rock, and other mineral ingredients. One of the reasons growers like pon is because it creates a balance of moisture and oxygen around the root system. The particles create spaces for airflow while moisture moves throughout the substrate and becomes available to the roots. Since pon is largely inert, it doesn’t provide much nutrition on its own.
