If tomorrow your country went to war and the internet was cut off, how would you talk to your family? This twenty dollar device might be the answer. It's called a Heltech V3 and you can find one online for around 20 dollars. First, buy two of them, one for you, one for whoever you want to reach. Connect it to your computer and install a free software called Meshtastic. It takes a minute. Then, install the Meshtastic app on your phone and pair it with the device over Bluetooth. That's it. Now what? I'm sending a message from the second device. No SIM card, no Wi-Fi, no internet. Message sent, message received. These devices talk to each other using radio signals. And if more people around you have one, your message hops from device to device to device, creating a giant communication network.
